Tarleton, Ross Run By Mustangs

Stephenville, TX -- Tarleton State's All American running back Derrick Ross was more than than WNMU could handle Saturday night as Ross and his Texan teammates turned a good football game into a track meet in the second half, handing WNMU its first loss of the season 45-21 to go with two wins. No. 22 Tarleton State improved to 2-0.

Ross ran for 269 of Tarleton's 542 yards of total offense as the Texans scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to erase a seven-point WNMU halftime lead.

WNMU trailed by 14 points after the first quarter, but made key adjustments and got a turnover and was able to put 21-second quarter points on the board to take a one-touchdown margin to the locker room.

The second half however was all Ross and the Texans.

Starting quarterback Kyle Meschnark (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain High School) scored two touchdowns and threw a 12-yard pass to Lateef Azziz (San Diego, CA/) for the other WNMU score before being injured early in the third quarter. Meschnark did not return to the line up in the second half and Scott Martinez (Phoenix, AZ/) took over, but the running game that WNMU had hitting on all cylinders in the second quarter was no where to be found in the second half.

Azziz rushed for 122 yards on the evening while Kasey Young (California City, CA/) added 77.

Meschnark went 6-of-11 for 68 yards before heading to the training room and Martinez connected on 6-18 with one interception.

The Mustangs will entertain Winona State next Saturday at Altamirano Stadium.
